Environmental Permitting Attorney (NEPA)

Job Description

Latitude Legal is seeking an experienced Environmental Permitting Attorney to support a global mining company on a full-time engagement basis. This is a fully remote role, and candidates may be located anywhere in the United States, provided they are available during West Coast business hours. The engagement is expected to last approximately 3-6 months.

The company is actively advancing large-scale mining projects and requires dedicated in-house legal support to manage a high volume of regulatory and permitting activity. This role is designed for an attorney who can step in immediately, attend and oversee permitting and agency meetings on the client's behalf, and provide substantive review of regulatory materials.

What You'll Do Includes:

  • Attend and oversee a high volume of NEPA, state permitting, water rights, and related agency meetings on behalf of the legal team, ensuring key issues are identified, tracked, and escalated appropriately
  • Review and analyze regulatory materials, agency correspondence, environmental impact statements, and permitting documentation across federal and state frameworks
  • Coordinate with outside environmental counsel, providing in-house oversight and ensuring alignment with the company's project timeline and legal strategy
  • Advise internal stakeholders on NEPA compliance, state permitting requirements, water rights considerations, and related federal and state environmental law
  • Track regulatory developments and agency activity across active permitting workstreams, flagging risks and opportunities in real time
  • Support the Head of Legal in managing the day-to-day flow of environmental and regulatory matters as project activity accelerates

Who You Are:

  • Attorney with 7+ years of experience in environmental permitting, regulatory compliance, or related practice, with meaningful exposure to NEPA, state permitting processes, and/or water rights
  • Experience managing or overseeing federal agency relationships, including BLM, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Army Corps of Engineers, EPA, or state environmental agencies
  • Comfortable operating in a fast-moving, project-driven environment and functioning as a reliable in-house presence for a lean legal team
  • Prior in-house experience at a mining, energy, or heavy industrial company is a strong plus; firm-side candidates with significant owner-side project permitting experience will also be considered
  • Highly organized, proactive, and able to synthesize complex regulatory information quickly and communicate it clearly to non-lawyer stakeholders
  • Available during West Coast business hours and comfortable working fully remotely
  • J.D. from an accredited law school
  • Outstanding references
