In-House Regulatory & Compliance Counsel - Healthcare / Medical Products
Job Description
Contract In-House Regulatory & Compliance Counsel - Healthcare / Medical Products Distribution (Hybrid, Chicagoland) (Part-Time to Full-Time, Engagement to Hire)
Latitude is seeking an experienced in-house regulatory and compliance counsel - a contract attorney with significant healthcare regulatory experience - for a hybrid engagement in the Chicagoland area with an established healthcare solutions and medical products distribution company serving customers nationwide. This is a high-impact opportunity to work directly with the company's senior legal and business leadership to rapidly build and strengthen critical regulatory, compliance, privacy, and contracting infrastructure. The engagement is hybrid (with WFH flexibility), and fully remote work will be considered for exceptional candidates. This role is an engagement to hire, so the lawyer who builds the framework may have the opportunity to stay on and run it.
The successful candidate will serve as a hands-on subject matter expert during a period of significant organizational growth and transformation. Rather than simply maintaining an established compliance program, this attorney will help build the framework - identifying and addressing regulatory gaps, developing policies and procedures, establishing a formal compliance program, and creating practical processes that can be maintained by the organization over the long term.
Initial priorities will include developing the company's Code of Conduct and broader compliance program; assessing and addressing healthcare regulatory gaps; developing a HIPAA compliance framework; modernizing privacy policies and practices; advising on data privacy and cybersecurity matters; and supporting commercial contracting needs.
This role will work closely with the company's sole in-house attorney and other business stakeholders and is particularly well suited for a practical, business-minded lawyer who can independently assess risk, develop solutions, and move multiple sophisticated initiatives forward simultaneously.
Basic Requirements for the Contract In-House Regulatory & Compliance Counsel:
- 5+ years of relevant legal experience, including significant healthcare regulatory and compliance experience
- Meaningful experience advising healthcare, life sciences, medical device, pharmaceutical, healthcare distribution, or similarly regulated organizations
- Experience developing, implementing, and/or enhancing corporate compliance programs, policies, procedures, and training
- Strong working knowledge of healthcare regulatory requirements, including HIPAA and healthcare fraud and abuse considerations
- Experience identifying regulatory gaps and translating legal requirements into practical operational processes and controls
- Experience advising on privacy, data protection, and cybersecurity matters
- Experience drafting and negotiating commercial agreements
- Ability to independently lead projects and produce polished, business-ready work product with limited day-to-day supervision
- Strong project-management skills and demonstrated ability to prioritize and advance multiple workstreams simultaneously
- Excellent academic credentials from an ABA-accredited law school
- Excellent analytical, written, verbal and interpersonal skills
- Licensed to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction and eligible to serve as in-house counsel in Illinois
- Outstanding professional references
Experience supporting a medical device, pharmaceutical, medical products, healthcare distribution, home infusion, or other FDA-regulated business is strongly preferred.
Representative Responsibilities:
- Develop and help implement a comprehensive corporate compliance program
- Draft and roll out a company-wide Code of Conduct and related compliance policies
- Assess existing operations for regulatory and compliance gaps and develop practical remediation plans
- Establish policies, procedures, controls, training, and reporting mechanisms designed to support an effective and sustainable compliance infrastructure
- Develop and enhance the organization's HIPAA privacy and security compliance framework
- Review and modernize privacy policies and advise on evolving privacy and data-protection requirements
- Partner with business and technology stakeholders on cybersecurity and information-governance matters
- Advise business teams regarding healthcare regulatory risks associated with new and existing programs, products, and commercial arrangements
- Provide practical guidance regarding healthcare fraud and abuse and other regulatory considerations
- Draft, review, and negotiate commercial contracts and other business agreements
- Work cross-functionally with operational leaders to translate legal and regulatory requirements into workable business processes
- Help establish frameworks that can ultimately be transitioned to and maintained by permanent internal resources
